Energy Consumption – Lighting

With energy prices continuing to rise, we are advising many of our clients to lock into a two or three year tariff thereby protecting themselves from future energy hikes.  However many businesses can reduce their energy consumption immediately by having an effective energy management scheme in place.

Over the next few months, we will focus on different areas within an office-based company and how they can use energy more efficiently thereby cutting costs.  By using these low and no-cost measures, businesses can reduce their energy bills by as much as 20%.

LIGHTING

  • In many offices, lights are left on much longer than necessary.  Appoint someone to be responsible for lighting. Use emails and staff meetings to remind people
  • Encourage staff to use natural light where possible.  e.g. daylight blinds remove glare by directing sunlight onto the ceiling
  • Replace any tungsten light bulbs to energy saving compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) which use 75% less energy and last 8-10 times longer
  • Install occupancy sensors in some rooms (e.g. storerooms, toilets, meeting rooms) to ensure lights only operate when there is somebody who needs them.
